PINE MOUNTAIN CLUB, Calif. — Known for its picturesque snowy peaks, Pine Mountain Club transforms into a tapestry of vibrant flora during warmer seasons, thanks to the dedication of the Lockhart Native Plant Garden in preserving local plant species.
Established in 2000 by a group of Pine Mountain Club residents, the garden showcases indigenous plants from the Los Padres National Forest. Susan Amon, a dedicated volunteer at the garden, reminisces about its origins, attributing its inception to the vision of Mary Ann and James Lockhart.
“They used to lead hikes through the forest and nearby areas,” Amon recalled. “Their passion for native plants, and how they were utilized by local Native American tribes like the Chumash and Yokuts, inspired many.”
The Lockharts collaborated closely with Pam De Vries-Gasser, a botanist renowned for her expertise in the San Emigdio Mountains. De Vries-Gasser’s comprehensive field guide cataloged over 190 native plants found in regions such as Gorman Hills, Frazier Mountain, and Mount Pinos, reflecting the diverse plant life spanning the area’s varied elevations.
“The book stands as both a tribute to Mary Ann and a community resource,” De Vries-Gasser remarked. “Its purpose is to educate and foster appreciation for our rich botanical heritage.”
In 2020, in recognition of Mary Ann Lockhart’s unwavering commitment, the garden was renamed the ‘Lockhart Native Plant Garden’. Since then, community efforts, spearheaded by Amon, have revitalized the garden, restoring its charm and educational value.
“When I joined four years ago, neglect had taken its toll,” Amon explained. “But with community support, we’ve rejuvenated the garden into a tranquil sanctuary.”
Located opposite the Pine Mountain Club clubhouse, the garden not only serves as an educational hub but also as a serene retreat for visitors seeking solace in nature. Amon expressed hope for the garden’s enduring legacy and continued community support.
“I envision it remaining a place of reflection and admiration,” Amon said. “A sanctuary where all can reconnect with nature and contribute to its preservation.”
The Lockhart Native Plant Garden stands as a testament to community spirit and environmental stewardship, thriving amidst Pine Mountain Club’s natural splendor.
