Emily Douglass, a seasoned florist with a passion for flowers, is set to open her new shop, Lowena Flowers, at 51 Killigrew Street this Saturday. Inspired by the scenic beauty of Tuscany and the distinctive charm of Cornwall, Douglass’s new venture promises to infuse Falmouth with vibrant floral arrangements and a touch of elegance.
From London to Tuscany: A Florist’s Journey
Emily Douglass, 29, embarked on her floristry journey after a transformative trip to New Zealand, which led her to reconsider her career path. Initially trained as a florist in London, Douglass has since accumulated extensive experience across various locations in the UK and Tuscany. Her career change came after realizing her deep-seated passion for flowers, which she has nurtured over the years.
“I decided to have a complete career change and retrain in floristry,” Douglass told the Packet. “I’m so excited, as I’ve wanted to own a shop since I started floristry.” Her dedication and love for the craft have guided her every step of the way, culminating in the opening of Lowena Flowers.
A Vision for Falmouth: Reviving the Local Floral Scene
Having lived in the Falmouth area for the past decade, Douglass has grown fond of the community’s vibrancy. She is eager to contribute to the local high street with her new shop, which aims to offer a personal touch in an increasingly digital world. “I always wanted to have a shop in Falmouth. Everything’s done online these days and there’s less of a community feel. I want people coming in to hand-pick flowers and then help me design their bouquets,” she explained.
The positive reaction from the local community has been overwhelming. Passersby have expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming opening, indicating a strong local interest in the return of a dedicated florist to the area.
Commitment to Community and Sustainability
Douglass’s vision for Lowena Flowers extends beyond floral arrangements. She is committed to promoting sustainability and supporting the local community. The shop will feature locally grown stems from nearby farms and prioritize eco-friendly practices, including reducing plastic usage. Additionally, Lowena Flowers will be stocking the first locally grown peat-free house plants.
Community engagement is another cornerstone of Douglass’s approach. She plans to host evening workshops aimed at providing social opportunities for isolated and older individuals. “I think community is so important,” she emphasized, reflecting her dedication to fostering connections within the neighborhood.
Reviving a Floral Tradition in Falmouth
Lowena Flowers marks a significant return of a dedicated florist to Falmouth, a town that has seen the closure of several well-known flower shops over the years. Notable past establishments include Jackie Phillips Flowers, which later became The Flower Studio, and Izella Rose on Killigrew Street, both of which have since closed.
Douglass’s new shop is poised to fill this gap, bringing a fresh perspective and a renewed focus on personal service and community involvement.
Grand Opening Special
To celebrate the grand opening, Lowena Flowers will offer a 10% discount on bouquets purchased on Saturday. This special offer aims to welcome the community into the new shop and give everyone a chance to experience the floral beauty that Douglass is excited to share.
Lowena Flowers is more than just a new business; it’s a commitment to enriching the local community through personal service, sustainability, and a love for flowers. Emily Douglass invites everyone to join her this Saturday to celebrate the shop’s opening and explore the beauty and joy of hand-picked floral creations.
