Benefitting from the combination of warm temperatures and abundant moisture during one of the most rain-soaked Julys on record, Exbury Gardens’ extensive collection of more than 80 hydrangea varieties is currently showcasing some of the most stunning blooms seen in years.

Adorning the renowned horticultural attraction in the heart of New Forest, these exquisite hydrangeas span a remarkable length of approximately 300 meters, gracefully adorning the main thoroughfare and weaving through a specially designed hydrangea walk. The walkway was thoughtfully rejuvenated in 2021, featuring an array of captivating and distinctive hydrangea varieties.

Nurtured by the woodland garden’s unique environment characterized by dappled sunlight and well-drained, moisture-rich soil, these captivating late summer shrubs find themselves in an ideal habitat. Their flower forms and hues span a broad spectrum – from delicate pinks and blues to rich purples and deep reds.

Speaking about the remarkable display, Head Gardener Tom Clarke expressed, “At Exbury, our affinity for hydrangeas runs deep. These plants thrive in the same nurturing conditions as our celebrated rhododendrons and azaleas, both of which our woodland gardens are renowned for. The hydrangeas contribute a magnificent spectacle that graces us throughout the mid to late summer period.”
