Bayfield Blooms: A Floral Adventure Awaits in the Heart of Apple Country

by Jennifer

While apples take center stage at Bayfield’s Apple Fest, there’s another delightful experience waiting for you along the “Fruit Loop” – Bayfield Blooms. Nestled on the same land as Blue Vista Farms, this charming destination allows visitors to embark on a unique pick-your-own flower bouquet adventure.

Upon arrival, you are equipped with a vase and a pair of snips, and then set free in the field, offering a distinct experience compared to traditional fruit picking.

“It’s not food, so you’re not eating it. So people are coming here for kind of like a different nourishment,” explains Missy Krift, the owner of Bayfield Blooms. “They’re not coming here to eat it; they’re coming here because they love flowers, they love the colors. It kind of satisfies their soul.”

With years of experience in Northland agriculture, Krift felt that cultivating a flower field was the natural next step. Her one-acre flower plot at Blue Vista Farm features an array of blooms, with approximately 90 percent being annuals that she starts from seed every year.

“It’s a lot of waiting, it’s a lot of hoping. Every spring, I’m like, this is never going to happen,” she chuckles. “You just kind of keep the faith, and then before you know it, they’re all blooming.”

The picking season typically kicks off in mid-July and extends through mid-October. While store-bought flowers are undoubtedly beautiful, there’s something truly magical about crafting your own bouquet amidst the blossoms.

“We have 10 rows, each spanning 150 feet, and you can just see, ‘I really like that one,’ or ‘That one fits with what I’m going for,'” Krift explains. “You can choose your own color scheme, you can really pick the flowers that kind of speak to you.”

Bayfield Blooms looks forward to welcoming visitors during the Apple Fest weekend, offering a unique opportunity to support a local, small business and indulge in the simple joy of creating your very own bouquet.
