Festive Season in Karnataka Witnesses Double Pricing of Fruits and Flowers

by Jennifer

As Karnataka readies itself to celebrate Ayudha Puja on October 23 and Vijayadashami on October 24, the customary surge in demand for fruits, flowers, and vegetables has translated into an expected price escalation just ahead of the festive fervor. Prices of specific fruits and flowers have, in fact, witnessed a significant surge, with some items experiencing a two-fold or even three-fold increase in costs over the past week. This price uptick has placed an added burden on citizens as they prepare for the festive celebrations.

Girish Muchal, General Secretary of the Karnataka Small Flower Growers Association, shed light on the scenario, stating, “The demand for open-field flower varieties such as chrysanthemum, marigold, and Cuban rose has surged. Chrysanthemum and marigold prices have doubled, while cube roses have seen their prices triple.” Muchal also highlighted that this price surge is a recurring trend observed during all major festive seasons.

While the festive season undoubtedly brings a boost in business for vendors, consumers find themselves in the position of purchasing essential items at elevated prices. Umesh Rathod, a resident of Malleshwaram, expressed the collective sentiment, stating, “We are left with no choice but to procure these essentials at the prices quoted. This pattern of price escalation is a recurring theme during every festival.”
