Josie Murray has brought the beauty of blooming flowers to the serene Hakataramea Valley. With her micro high country flower farm, known as High Country Flowery, located on Caberfeidh Station, she has transformed her passion into a flourishing endeavor that’s capturing the hearts of many.
As a farm environmental consultant, Mrs. Murray remotely serves a South Canterbury-based farming company while juggling her responsibilities as a soon-to-be mother for the second time, with the expected arrival of her child in December.
Josie’s affinity for growing flowers traces its roots to her upbringing, where her mother cultivated a sizable garden, and her grandfather had a keen interest in growing vegetables. She fondly remembers how bunches of flowers were plucked from the garden before family visits.
After the birth of her first child, Josie sought an outdoor activity they could enjoy together in the radiant sunshine. While she already had experience with vegetable gardening, her curiosity piqued about cut flowers. Thus, she embarked on a journey of research and discovery.
The couple relocated to the Hakataramea Valley three years ago, prompting Josie to investigate which flowers could thrive in the valley’s potentially extreme climate. Hardy annuals became her choice, as they could withstand temperatures as low as minus 10°C to minus 15°C. She planted them as seedlings in autumn, allowing them to brave the elements of frost, snow, and wind before flourishing in spring. Bulbs, including tulips, were also a perfect fit, needing a cool period in the ground.
While many gardeners started planting at Labor Weekend, Josie preferred to cultivate tender annuals in November, when the weather in the valley was more predictable.
To safeguard her garden from the disruptions caused by dogs and a curious toddler, her husband fenced off an area.
Choosing a favorite flower proves challenging for Josie, but in spring, Iceland poppies hold a special place in her heart. She also revels in growing and working with dahlias, known for their ease of cultivation, and finds snapdragons equally charming.
Her journey began with personal cultivation, with Josie documenting her vibrant blooms on an Instagram page. Her passion for creativity, photography, and sharing the joys and challenges of flower growing started attracting the attention of many. People began to reach out, requesting flowers for various occasions, and her business expanded through word of mouth. In addition to nurturing her venture, Josie discovered the beauty of community-building, as she met numerous individuals while selling her blossoms.
Josie is a self-taught florist and relishes the creative process involved in flower arrangement. While she delved into online research, she finds that her knack for combining flowers comes naturally. She relishes the moments when she can disconnect from the world and create with flowers.
Market-style and garden bouquets have become increasingly popular, as people appreciate the rustic and untamed beauty of these colorful arrangements. Sustainability is also at the core of High Country Flowery, as Josie avoids using single-use plastic and floral foam.
As for the future of High Country Flowery, Josie remains open to possibilities. Depending on her family’s future plans, she may explore opportunities to expand her flourishing venture.
