ANNAPOLIS, MD – On West Street in downtown Annapolis, a familiar face graces the bustling sidewalks next to a vibrant array of freshly-cut flowers.
Originally hailing from West Africa, Darim Traore has become a beloved figure for residents and visitors alike, renowned not only for his cheerful demeanor but also for the diverse selection of radiant bouquets he offers.
When the sun illuminates Annapolis, it’s a safe bet that Traore can be found at his flower stand outside Reynold’s Tavern, where his infectious smile is as much a fixture as his floral displays.
However, beyond the blooms, Traore imparts a poignant message about the power of kindness and its ripple effects.
Reflecting on his journey, Traore shared that after initially coming to America in 1993 from Mali, he pursued an accounting degree in Canada. Despite his academic pursuits, his passion ultimately led him to the sidewalks of Annapolis, preferring the open air to an office setting.
“I never expected to find myself here selling flowers,” Traore admitted. “Life always surprises you. This was mine.”
Traore delights in engaging with customers, exchanging stories, and fostering connections. His love for his work is matched by the warmth he feels from the community.
“The people here in Annapolis, they show me so much love,” Traore expressed. “Even during the hardest times, like when I lost my mom, their support was overwhelming.”
“He makes everyone in Annapolis smile, and we really appreciate it,” remarked a satisfied customer.
Central to Traore’s philosophy is the belief that “kindness always pays.”
“If you show kindness, people will respond with love,” he affirmed. “I’ve found kind people everywhere I’ve been, but especially here in Annapolis.”
Traore’s flower stand operates from 10 a.m. until sundown, Tuesday through Sunday, from February to November. Positioned outside Reynold’s Tavern on Church Circle, Traore’s presence continues to brighten the days of those who encounter him, a testament to the enduring impact of simple acts of kindness in a bustling city.
