Grace and Zane Schroeder’s vision, nurtured on their property at Broken Maple Farm, has flourished into a vibrant flower-growing operation. Against the backdrop of rolling hills, rows of zinnias in shades of red, orange, pink, and yellow sway gently in the breeze. Whimsical Craspedia, fondly known as “billy balls,” dance atop long stems, while Ranunculus, canterbury bells, and stock add splashes of color to the expansive fields.

For the Schroeders, transforming their passion for gardening into a thriving business has been a journey marked by community support and personal fulfillment. Having relocated to Trafalgar just two years ago, they have quickly become integral members of the local landscape.

“We’re humbled to be a part of this,” Grace Schroeder remarked, reflecting on the warm reception they’ve received.

The inspiration behind Broken Maple Farm emerged during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Grace, a nurse at IU Health University Hospital, sought solace from the stresses of her profession by sharing homegrown bouquets with her colleagues.

“Everything was just so depressing and everybody was struggling. Seeing the joy it brought people made me happy,” Grace explained.

Upon moving to Trafalgar in 2022, the Schroeders found themselves with a fertile expanse of land, formerly a cattle pasture. They meticulously prepared the soil, transforming it into an ideal environment for their floral ambitions.

With encouragement from Zane, a medical sales representative, Grace expanded her hobby into a business venture in 2023, founding Broken Maple Farm. The farm quickly gained popularity, initially through providing flowers for weddings and subsequently through a roadside stand offering pre-picked bouquets.

Their upcoming you-pick event on July 6 marks a significant milestone for the farm, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the beauty of their floral haven. Participants will have the opportunity to wander the grounds, selecting blooms to create personalized arrangements.

“We tackle pretty much everything together,” Grace shared, emphasizing their collaborative approach.

Anticipation for the event is high, following a successful seedling sale earlier in the season. The community’s enthusiastic response has exceeded expectations, underscoring the farm’s growing popularity.

Beyond the you-pick event, Broken Maple Farm plans to host additional community gatherings throughout July, including Sunset Sip and Snip activities where attendees can enjoy refreshments while participating in evening flower picking sessions.

Reflecting on their journey and the warm embrace of the Trafalgar community, the Schroeders expressed gratitude for the support they’ve received.

“We feel blessed; we lucked out that we found this property and the community has embraced us like they have,” Zane remarked.

As they prepare for the you-pick event, the Schroeders encourage participants to purchase tickets in advance through their website to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Visitors are reminded to adhere to farm rules, including supervised children and staying on designated paths.

For those eager to join in the floral festivities, Broken Maple Farm’s you-pick event promises not only a chance to connect with nature but also a glimpse into the blossoming success of a local dream turned reality.
