On Sunday afternoon, a small gathering gathered outside St John’s Methodist Church, eagerly anticipating the festival’s commencement. Reverend Keith Sandow led a brief service alongside the adorned well dressing, followed by light refreshments served amidst the vibrant floral displays inside.

The Grade 2 listed chapel provided a fitting backdrop for this year’s exhibition, showcasing a variety of customs and traditions through meticulously crafted floral arrangements. From local festivities like the Hayfield May queen festival to the Castleton garland ceremony, each exhibit captured the essence of cherished local customs.

Volunteers, despite lacking formal training, demonstrated remarkable creativity and dedication in constructing each display. Their efforts have not only impressed local attendees but also drawn visitors from distant locales, all drawn to witness the intricate floral interpretations on display throughout the week. Notably, there is no admission fee for attendees.

In addition to the floral displays, homemade refreshments prepared by church members and friends have garnered praise for their quality and hospitality.

The festival remains open daily from 10:30 am to 4:00 pm until Saturday 6th July, concluding with the aforementioned Songs of Praise service at 6 pm on Sunday 7th July. This year’s Hayfield Flower Festival promises to be a cultural and visual delight for all who attend, celebrating community spirit and the rich tapestry of local customs and folklore.
