The event, which marks a nationwide initiative held during the first week of July each year, saw enthusiastic participation from over 150 individuals. This year’s theme, “Ek ped maa ke naam (A tree in the name of your mother)”, aimed to underscore the ecological importance of trees.

Emphasizing the significance of the week-long celebration, which ran from July 1 to 7, officials highlighted its goal to promote environmental preservation through extensive tree planting. Government entities, NGOs, and volunteers collaborated to raise awareness about the vital role of trees in sustaining the ecosystem.

Pramod Kumar Srivastava, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Gautam Budh Nagar, stressed the broader message of the festival, stating, “The week is dedicated to fostering afforestation efforts and fostering public understanding of the critical need to protect our forests, which are increasingly under threat.”

Reflecting on the participation, Srivastava noted, “Approximately 150 participants, including personnel from CISF and ITBP, schoolchildren, senior IFS officers, Chief Conservator of Forests NK Janu, and local residents, gathered at Surajpur wetland to plant saplings on Wednesday.”

He added, “Over 500 saplings were carefully planted, featuring a variety of species including fruit-bearing trees like orange, sweet lime, and guava. Participants were also educated on environmental conservation practices and the imperative of expanding our tree cover.”

Originating in 1950 under the initiative of KM Munshi, the former Union Minister of Agriculture and Food, ‘Van Mahotsav’ continues to inspire communities nationwide to engage in forest conservation efforts and promote sustainable living practices.

This year, the Uttar Pradesh state government has committed to planting 350 million saplings across the state, aiming to enhance green cover and mitigate environmental challenges.

The ‘Van Mahotsav’ celebration at Surajpur wetland stands as a testament to local commitment towards environmental stewardship and the collective effort to safeguard our natural resources for future generations.
