Undercliffe Cemetery, steeped in history and natural beauty, is set to host a vibrant summer celebration next week. Following the successful launch of new Trail Boards, which spotlight the rich tapestry of Bradford’s past and present luminaries, and recent engaging events like the Bradford Literature Festival tour and the solemn Bradford Casualties: Somme July 1 afternoon, the Festival of Flowers promises a day of family-friendly activities.

Organized by Zahabia Naveed, a dedicated volunteer, the event will take place on Sunday, July 7, from 12 noon to 4 pm. It aims to showcase the stunning greenery of Undercliffe Cemetery, known for its abundant floral displays throughout the year.

“As a volunteer here, I’ve always been struck by the variety of flowers that adorn this site,” explains Zahabia. “From wild blooms like daisies, clover, and buttercups to the blossoming trees and shrubs that provide sustenance to local wildlife, the cemetery truly resembles a vast garden. This inspired me to propose the idea of a festival to the Trustees.”

The afternoon promises an array of flower-themed activities suitable for all ages. Over 200 plants, nurtured by volunteers, will be available for purchase. Attendees can explore activities such as ‘hapa zome’ (plant pounding), leaf dyeing, and eco-printing. For the creatively inclined, there will be opportunities to paint favorite flowers on pebbles or learn the art of potting and pruning fuchsias. Additionally, forest school activities, guided tree tours, and the chance to create seed bombs for home gardening will be on offer.

Visitors can also relax at the onsite cafe, which will be serving refreshments and offering books and information for perusal. The area’s Trail Boards invite leisurely exploration, while ample seating encourages picnicking amidst the natural splendor, accompanied by the soothing melodies of birdsong. Keen-eyed attendees may even spot local wildlife or catch a glimpse of a red kite soaring overhead.

Reflecting on the festival’s development, Zahabia remarks, “Organizing this festival has been a tremendous learning experience for me. I’m grateful to the Festival of Flowers committee for their guidance and support, which have been invaluable.”

She extends her gratitude to Bradford Council and Give Bradford for their financial backing, which has made this engaging event possible. Conveniently accessible by bus (routes 686/687 to Undercliffe Lane entrance and route 645 to Otley Road entrance), the Festival of Flowers promises an enriching day out for all, with all activities offered free of charge.

For those seeking a blend of natural beauty, cultural enrichment, and community spirit, the Festival of Flowers at Undercliffe Cemetery beckons as a must-visit event this summer.
