As of July 1, SWOP, the longstanding mental health charity, has undergone a significant rebranding effort, now operating under the name ‘Plants and Minds’.
Established in 1990, SWOP has been renowned for its therapeutic plant nurseries located in Dorset: Cherry Tree Nursery in Northbourne and Chestnut Nursery in Poole. Originally known as ‘The Sheltered Work Opportunities Project’, the charity has evolved over the years to focus on integrating horticultural therapy into mental health support services.
Supported by NHS Dorset and the Community Action Network (CAN) through the Dorset Community Foundation (DCF), ‘Plants and Minds’ aims to enhance mental wellbeing through social prescribing initiatives. This approach encourages individuals to engage in therapeutic activities involving plants, fostering a sense of purpose and community.
Maria Tidy, Community Liaison Officer at Plants and Minds, expressed the rationale behind the rebrand: “While SWOP was recognized by its acronym, it didn’t fully convey our mission. We wanted a name that clearly communicates our dual focus on horticultural therapy and our nursery operations, which are beloved local institutions.”
The charity’s efforts have garnered praise from stakeholders like Lucy Cribb of Health Watch Dorset, who remarked on the enriching experience of participating in the ‘See How We Grow’ day. She highlighted the project’s role in promoting mental health through nature-based activities and cultivating a deeper connection with the environment.
Looking ahead, Maria Tidy outlined future plans for ‘Plants and Minds’, including the launch of a monthly networking group, ‘Let’s All Grow Together’, aimed at fostering collaboration among similar organizations.
