Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens recently celebrated the peak bloom of its picturesque lotus flowers over the holiday weekend, as confirmed by NPS Program Manager of Visitor Services Vince Vaise. While the pinnacle of the bloom has passed, enthusiasts still have the opportunity to witness the stunning array of colors adorning the park’s floral landscape.

According to Vaise, this weekend offers a prime viewing window for the vibrant lotus varieties, including the iconic yellow “American Lotus” and the striking pink and purple hues of the “Asian Lotus.” However, time is of the essence for those planning a visit.

Typically reaching peak bloom around mid-July, this year saw an early unveiling of the lotus petals due to hot and dry weather conditions starting from late June. As a result, even varieties that traditionally bloom later, like those in late July or early August, are currently in full flower.

In contrast, last year’s cooler summer temperatures delayed the lotus bloom until late July, illustrating the variability of nature’s timing.

Beyond lotuses, Kenilworth’s famed water lilies offer a more extended viewing season throughout the month. “For those captivated by water lilies, mornings provide the best opportunity as they begin to close in the afternoon,” advises Vaise. “Several enchanting ponds along the trail showcase these blooms, reminiscent of a scene from a Monet painting.”

Visitors are encouraged by Vaise to come prepared with sunscreen and water, suggesting exploration of local wildlife and native flowers like the vibrant purple Pickerel Weed currently in bloom around the marsh. Knowledgeable park rangers are available to answer inquiries about the diverse plant life on display.

Kenilworth is gearing up to host its annual Lotus and Water Lily Festival from July 19th to 21st under the theme “The Art of Lotus and Lilies.” Festival highlights include multicultural musical performances, artistic workshops, fitness sessions, and guided tours showcasing the garden’s rich biodiversity. Extended hours during the festival week provide relief from the midday heat.

Located at 1550 Anacostia Ave., NE, Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is accessible via Metro’s Orange Line or by bicycle along the Anacostia River Trail. Limited on-site parking is available, and admission is always free, welcoming all to experience the serene beauty of the aquatic blooms.
