Fort Dodge is gearing up to host its much-anticipated annual flower show, organized by the Fort Dodge Federated Garden Club. The event, titled the National Garden Club Standard Flower Show, promises a vibrant spectacle under the theme “I dream of …”
Scheduled to unfold from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, the show will take place at The Lions Den within Armstrong Park, conveniently located at 731 Exposition Drive. Admission is complimentary, offering an accessible opportunity for floral enthusiasts and families alike to immerse themselves in a world of natural beauty.
Nancy Phillips, speaking on behalf of the local club, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming event, highlighting its unique blend of inspiration and education. “You won’t find anything else like this during the year,” Phillips remarked, emphasizing the show’s appeal to all ages and interests within the community.
Families are encouraged to attend together, with Phillips noting the captivating effect the displays have on children. “We’ve had children at the show say ‘Let’s go home and plant a garden,'” she shared, underscoring the event’s potential to foster a love for gardening among younger attendees.
The show will feature a diverse array of exhibits categorized into horticulture and artistic sections. The horticulture segment will showcase meticulously cultivated flowers grown by club members, totaling over 100 exhibits. Meanwhile, the artistic categories will include innovative designs crafted from fresh or dried plant materials, ranging from intricate small-scale compositions to festive tabletop arrangements celebrating holidays such as Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Independence Day.
In addition to these displays, the botanical art section promises creative interpretations where plant materials are used for home decor, jewelry making, and outdoor embellishments. Each exhibit will undergo evaluation by a panel of three judges, with ribbons awarded to recognize outstanding contributions in each category.
As anticipation builds for this weekend’s event, Fort Dodge residents and visitors alike can look forward to a celebration of nature’s beauty and the creativity of local gardening enthusiasts.
