Flower Town USA: Stanford, Montana Blooms With Vibrant Colors

by Jennifer

In the small town of Stanford, Montana, a remarkable transformation occurs each summer. What starts as a modest planting effort in June blossoms into a stunning display of color and life by August, making this the best time of year to visit. The town, affectionately known as “Flower Town, USA,” is currently adorned with vibrant flowers, bringing joy to residents and visitors alike until the first frost of the season.

For 30 years, the beauty of Stanford has been sustained through a collective community effort. The tradition is upheld through strong local support, as evidenced by the annual fundraising successes of the Wreath Auction and the Annual Dinner and Live Auction, now held each spring. These events consistently break records and ensure the continuation of this beloved town project.

This year’s town planting day took place on June 14, with nearly 20 dedicated volunteers, including four young participants, working swiftly to complete the task. In a matter of hours, they filled approximately 85 planters with an array of flowers such as rudbeckia, salvia, marigolds, zinnias, potato vines, black-eyed Susan vines, dahlias, and more. Beyond these planters, the town boasts 34 window boxes, two wagons, two repurposed old trucks, spokes, an old washing machine, a water trough, and various flower beds, all pre-planted and now bursting with color.

The abundance of flowers is matched only by the community pride that fuels this ongoing beautification effort. Stanford, located about 150 miles north of Livingston, is more than just a picturesque spot; it is a testament to the power of community spirit.

To maintain the flowers, volunteers dedicate themselves daily to watering, using hundreds of gallons transported by a Polaris equipped with a water tank. This small but committed group ensures the flowers remain vibrant and healthy throughout the summer.

Funding for these efforts is managed by the Stanford Beautification Committee, a non-profit organization dedicated to Main Street improvement projects. The committee raises money throughout the year, particularly through the December wreath auction and the May dinner and auction. Additional financial support comes from private donations and major contributors, including the Judith Basin Endowment Fund, the Strand Foundation, and the C.M. Russell Stampede Club Community Fund.

Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the Stanford community, “Flower Town, USA” continues to flourish, providing a beautiful and welcoming environment for all who pass through.
