Liverpool’s Flower Streets are undergoing a vibrant transformation with the addition of eleven murals inspired by the floral theme of the neighborhood’s street names. The final two murals are set to be completed next month.

Harebell and Snowdrop Streets are the latest to receive these stunning artworks, which adorn the gable-ends of buildings with murals that reflect the streets’ botanical namesakes.

Nora, a long-time resident of the Flower Streets, expressed her delight at the new additions. “I’ve lived on this street for 50 years, and I think this is wonderful. It feels as though they’re recognizing we are here,” she said.

Art for the Community

The murals are the work of visual artist Madeleine Pires, who emphasized the importance of community involvement in the project. “There’s a lot to be said for people coming together, and these murals are an extension of that,” Pires explained. “Art is made to be seen, and it’s for everybody.”

Pires, who has thoroughly enjoyed her work on the project, expressed her eagerness to begin the final two murals. The project is spearheaded by Liverpool’s Dot-arts organization and has brought together residents and school groups through a series of free workshops. These sessions included lessons on ecology, as well as activities in storytelling, writing, drawing, and painting.

A community celebration marked the unveiling of the first nine murals, which include artwork inspired by Crocus, Daisy, Pansy, and Woodbine Streets.

In addition to the murals, a short film has been produced to document the project, which is part of the council’s Safer Streets Initiative and Creative Neighbourhoods programme.

Harry Doyle, Liverpool City Council’s cabinet member for culture, health, and wellbeing, highlighted the project’s impact on the community. “The project showcases the power of art and creativity, and residents have truly embraced the work,” he said.
