by Jennifer

Gardens by the Bay has launched its first Australian-themed floral exhibition, the “Carnival of Flowers.” This vibrant showcase, developed in partnership with the Toowoomba Regional Council, brings the essence of Australia’s longest-running flower show to Singapore. The event features children’s floats created in local art classes and will run until November 17, 2024.

A Tribute to Toowoomba’s Garden City Legacy

The exhibition pays homage to Toowoomba, affectionately known as the Garden City. More than 8,000 plants representing 30 varieties are on display at the Flower Dome. Notable plants include the exotic waratah and banksia, both making their debut at Gardens by the Bay. The event was officially launched by Senior Minister of State Zaqy Mohamad, Australian High Commissioner Allaster Cox, and Toowoomba Mayor Geoff McDonald, along with a delegation from the Australian city.

Showcasing Australia’s Unique Plant Life

The “Carnival of Flowers” highlights Australia’s extraordinary plant life, particularly species that have adapted to endure harsh climates. Among the featured plants are the grevillea, known for its spider-like flowers, and the pink mulla mulla, which bears resemblance to a bottlebrush. Another focal point is the waratah, often likened to a pincushion for its dome-shaped bloom.

Visitors will also encounter the largest display of kangaroo paws ever presented at Gardens by the Bay, showcasing 14 varieties in rare colors such as blue-green and purple. These whimsical plants, with their woolly flowers shaped like a kangaroo’s fingers, add a playful element to the exhibition.

Spectacular Floral Floats and Art Displays

In a nod to the annual float parade of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, the event features floral floats constructed from preserved flowers. Highlights include a 4-meter-tall Ferris wheel and a rotating carousel adorned with Australian farm animals. The floral displays are enhanced by nearly 400 wooden ornaments depicting Australian wildlife, which were collaboratively painted by students from both Singapore and Toowoomba.

Additionally, the exhibition showcases First Nations art from Australia. A standout piece is the 3-meter-tall “Genestreaming Journey Sculpture,” symbolizing the deep connections between various species. This significant artwork, gifted to Gardens by the Bay, is being displayed outside Australia for the first time, embodying the enduring friendship between Singapore and Australia.

Larger-Than-Life Paper Flowers

Singaporean artist Pei Li, known as PeiPer, has created massive sculptures of native Australian flowers, including the Golden Wattle, Australia’s national flower. Each intricate piece features over 1,680 stamens, reflecting Pei Li’s exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
