A committee formed to save the Battle of Flowers has announced plans to hold a smaller, free version of the event, with backing from a government grant.
Martyn Maguire, leader of the Battle Strategy Group, stated, “We’re going to bring the battle back to its roots, but we won’t stretch beyond our means because we simply can’t afford it.”
Economic Development Minister Deputy Kirsten Morel confirmed that the government would provide up to £220,000, dependent on a “strong business plan.”
He explained, “A more budget-friendly battle will allow people to focus better, stick to their budgets, and create an event that everyone can be proud of and enjoy.”
Earlier this week, financial records for the Battle of Flowers were leaked, revealing significant losses. In 2024, the event faced a deficit of over £150,000, adding to the £80,000 loss in 2023.
The Battle Strategy Group met with Morel and exhibitors this week to discuss the future of the event.
Maguire confirmed plans to hold the event in August, with a day parade on Friday, August 8, and a night parade on Saturday, August 9.
He said, “We are close to resolving the issues. Debts must be settled, but the battle has assets that will be used to secure the debt. It will take time, but we’re committed to getting through this.”
Maguire emphasized, “We’ll only spend what we have. We have experienced exhibitors, and we’re going to focus on putting on a great parade, but we won’t go beyond our budget.”
Morel, speaking to the BBC, said all parties were working together to find a way forward. He added, “The parade will be smaller, using junior and smaller floats, instead of the usual large parade down the avenue.”
Morel emphasized that the government’s funding would be contingent on a solid business plan. “What we are looking at is a much smaller, free event that can help reinvigorate the battle and bring it closer to the community.”
In a statement, the current Board of the Jersey Battle of Flowers reaffirmed its commitment to resolving financial issues and fully supported the Battle Strategy Group’s efforts in planning future events.
