The Kerala Legal Metrology Department has taken decisive action by filing cases against six vendors involved in the sale of jasmine flower strings utilizing unauthorized measurement practices. These vendors were found to employ an outdated and imprecise method known as the ‘Muzham,’ which relies on the length of the arm to measure the jasmine flower strings. This approach, however, lacks accuracy as individuals possess varying arm lengths.
As a consequence of their actions, the offenders have been subjected to a fine of Rs 2,000 each. It is important to note that established regulations stipulate that the sale of jasmine flowers must be conducted using either a fixed-length scale or a calibrated weighing scale. Furthermore, stern measures have been taken against those who opted to sell flowers using weighing scales with unverified weights.
Of particular note is the rarity of legal metrology officials inspecting flower stalls situated along roadsides, especially during the festive occasion of Onam. Officials have shed light on the fact that certain vendors have taken advantage of this situation, exploiting the lack of oversight to engage in deceptive practices and unfairly manipulate measurement standards, ultimately leading to financial losses for unsuspecting consumers.
