York Fresh Flowers Expands Once More: A Blooming Success Story

by Jennifer

York Fresh Flowers, a business with humble beginnings that trace back to a market stall in York, is now celebrating its second expansion in three years. Having started with a barrow in High Ousegate, this remarkable journey has seen them transition from market stalls to brick-and-mortar stores.

Their latest move finds York Fresh Flowers relocating to Melrosegate from their former premises in Fishergate, a testament to their consistent growth and success. Simon, one of the founders, reflects on this journey, stating, “This feels like a bit of an achievement after starting from a market stall in York. My first stall was at 16 selling sweets.”

The new, more spacious location not only marks an expansion but also heralds the introduction of an extended range of offerings. Customers can now enjoy an even wider selection in-store, in addition to the business’s existing online services.

In a bid to cater to diverse customer preferences, York Fresh Flowers is diversifying its inventory by adding candles and giftware to complement its existing range of cut flowers, bouquets, indoor and outdoor plants, and pots.

Paula, another key figure in the business, brings her self-taught floristry skills to the forefront, and their daughter Jodie is also actively involved in the art of flower arrangement. Unique commissions are a hallmark of their business, with one standout example being a bouquet crafted in the distinct lime green and chocolate colors of an Aero bar, paying tribute to a former Rowntree’s employee.

Notably, the Fishergate location marked their first foray into a physical store in the autumn of 2020, and they have continued to thrive. Simon still operates the original barrow, now located near Bettys in St Helen’s Square, while also contributing to their new premises.

York Fresh Flowers has now set up shop in the east of the city at Melrosegate, taking over the former Patricia May Florists. Their association with Interflora, a global brand renowned for fresh, handcrafted bouquets and the ability to fulfill bespoke requests for specific colors and flower varieties, further underscores their commitment to quality.

The business sources its flowers from wholesalers in Gilberdyke in the East Riding of Yorkshire and the Leeds market. Among their most popular items are the timeless and cherished traditional bouquets.
