Surge in Prices Amid High Demand for Undas
Vendors near cemeteries in Davao City have responded to the soaring demand for flowers during the Undas season, which encompasses All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day, by increasing their prices due to limited supply.
With the influx of orders for floral tributes, vendors have raised their prices by P10 to P20 per pot or bundle, reflecting the market dynamics during this period.
The prices for various types of flowers have been adjusted to match the heightened demand. A pot of roses, regardless of color, is now priced from P25 to P100, depending on size and the number of flowers. Chrysanthemum jemba pots range from P20 to P100, while anthurium pots are pegged at P35 to P100. Lilies are priced at P40 to P120 per pot. Some vendors also offer individual flowers, such as roses and anthuriums, for P5 to P15 each.
Vendor interviews revealed that the sudden surge in demand has contributed to the modest price increases. However, not all vendors have raised their prices, and some maintain consistent rates.
Melicia Padilla, a flower vendor near Tibungco Public Cemetery, explained that their prices will not increase during Undas, as they are the primary suppliers and do not impose additional charges. According to her, pricing depends on market conditions.
On the other hand, Lorna Laurente, another vendor, cited the rising costs of materials, such as sponges used in arranging flower bundles in pots, as a reason for increasing prices. “Materials needed to make bundles of flowers in pots are expensive, so we need to increase prices,” Laurente said.
Undas holds great religious significance in the predominantly Catholic Philippines, where families honor their deceased loved ones by visiting cemeteries, offering prayers, and adorning graves with flowers.
