When asked about her journey into gardening and her active participation in numerous flower shows, June shared that her love for gardening has been a lifelong passion. Her journey into flower shows began when friends Ruth Carter and Margaret Yates encouraged her to enter her first show. The Mansfield Agricultural and Pastoral Society annual show required more floral entries, and June’s friends were captivated by the variety and colors of flowers in her backyard.

Over the years, June has achieved numerous accolades and special awards for her cut flowers, pot plants, roses, and floral arrangements. Her collection includes an impressive array of “Most Successful Exhibitor – Floriculture” sashes, alongside countless “First Prize” certificates from local shows. She has also earned 10 prestigious Medallions, the SS McKay Medals from the Royal Horticultural Society of Victoria (Melbourne Show).

In 2019, June realized her dream by winning her first Champion Rose awards. She recalls the sense of accomplishment in taking home the top award that year, especially since the show faced challenges in the following years due to COVID and floods.

While she takes pride in her own achievements, June also actively contributes to the show by helping with the setup, ensuring that entries are correctly positioned and displayed. She acknowledges the evolving rules and judging criteria over the years, which have added new dimensions to the art of participating in flower shows.

June’s enthusiasm for gardening and plants continues to grow, fueled by her love for the art. Her journey through the world of flowers has not only enriched her life but also provided opportunities for recognition and success in the local horticultural community.

As the Mansfield Agricultural and Pastoral Society annual show approaches on November 18, June, along with the society, encourages more children to participate in the floral sections, with special categories designed to inspire the younger generation’s love for blooms and blossoms. The show promises to be a delightful celebration of nature’s beauty, and June Mathieson’s unwavering dedication is an inspiration to all who share her passion for gardening and flowers.
