The Norsewood Flower Show celebrated its 14th edition this month, attracting a record number of entries and showcasing nature’s vibrant beauty. Organized by Heather Cheer, the show experienced favorable weather, with warm, sunny conditions encouraging participants to display a diverse array of blooms. The absence of challenging weather elements, such as wind and rain, further contributed to the success of the event.
With over 300 entries – a recent record – the show witnessed enthusiastic participation from both seasoned and first-time contributors. Rhododendrons took center stage, flourishing during their peak flowering season alongside azaleas and irises. Surprisingly, numerous roses made an appearance early in their season, adding to the floral diversity.
The variety of flowers on display extended beyond the usual suspects, featuring peonies, granny bonnets, alstromeria, fuchsias, viburnum, and even clematis, a new category introduced this year. The coveted title of Champion Bloom was awarded to Heather Kitson for her cerise peony, closely followed by organizer Heather Cheer, who secured Champion Rhododendron (Eric’s Triumph) and Champion Hybrid T Rose (Dublin Bay).
The Norsewood and Districts School children actively participated in the event, showcasing their creativity with aqua jars, pine-cone animals, mosaic saucers, and floral arrangements. Simone Dalasso from Argentina, a newcomer, earned the title of Best Junior Entry for his decorated pinecone.
Heather Cheer expressed gratitude to the chief sponsor, Dannevirke Mitre 10, for their support, providing the winner’s prize – a rose named “Feeling Better.” The show also received backing from Norsewood Promotions and Norsewood Lions. The school played a pivotal role by offering the venue and supporting junior entries. Additionally, local Dannevirke businesses sponsored the raffle prize, and the collective effort of volunteers contributed to the overall success of the Norsewood Flower Show.
