Nestled along U Street in Northwest D.C., Lee’s Flower and Card Shop is a cherished establishment radiating the unique and enchanting fragrance of fresh flowers. Stepping into the store, one is immediately greeted by this aromatic symphony, although the employees, surrounded by it daily, have become somewhat immune.
Kristie Lee Jones, the proprietor, expressed, “Unfortunately, we get immune to the smell. Because we’re around it all the time, we don’t smell it, but when I go away on vacation and come back, the smell is more pungent.”
A generational presence in the nation’s capital, Lee’s Flower and Card Shop was established in 1945 by Jones’s grandparents. Originating as a card shop, it gradually evolved to incorporate flowers, plants, and gifts into its offerings.
Jones, who began working at the shop at the age of 12, temporarily ventured into a different career for around 15 years. Eventually, she returned to her family’s business, and now, with over 20 years of commitment, she stands as its owner.
With a robust connection to the community, Lee’s actively engages in events and holiday parties. The shop sources its flowers from four or five local wholesalers. Jones oversees a design team responsible for crafting various flower arrangements, but she still enjoys personally delving into the task whenever time permits.
Reflecting on her floral design, she likened it to riding a bike. “Once you learn it, it doesn’t go away. Every time I come up with something different, and it really allows me to just have my creative juices flowing.”
As Christmas approaches, Lee’s Flower and Card Shop experiences heightened activity, with customers adorning their homes for the festive season. However, the pinnacle of their bustling calendar is Valentine’s Day.
Jones humorously remarked, “It’s funny, it comes in February but it always seems like it comes really fast after Christmas. The next thing you know, it’s Valentine’s Day, so we’re always busy.”
