The cherished Pasadena tradition, held on Monday, featured Broadway luminary Audra McDonald as the grand marshal and embraced the theme “Celebrating a World of Music: The Universal Language.” Following recent rains and overcast conditions, the 8 a.m. commencement of the spectacle was blessed with sunshine, complemented by a military flyover featuring a B-2 stealth bomber.

A myriad of imaginative floats graced the parade route, with Kaiser Permanente’s vibrant creation, “Symphony of You,” standing out for its exceptional use and presentation of flowers, earning it the prestigious President Award. The coveted 2024 Sweepstakes Trophy went to the San Diego Zoo for their 55-foot float, “It All Started With a Roar,” a jubilant portrayal of their mascot Rex the Lion and a tribute to wildlife conservation.

Among the scheduled performers were Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child, “The Voice” winner Cassadee Pope, and “American Idol” champion Jordin Sparks. Crowds, having lined the 5.5-mile parade route, were treated to the talents of nearly 20 marching bands, including groups from Japan and Costa Rica, alongside schools from across the nation.

The seven-member Royal Court, comprised of Pasadena-area high school girls distinguished for their public speaking, academic prowess, youth leadership, and community involvement, added a regal touch to the proceedings.

Despite the joyous atmosphere, the parade encountered a brief interruption when approximately 50 pro-Palestinian protesters, advocating for a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas conflict, displayed a banner that temporarily blocked the route. Following police orders, the protesters dispersed peacefully, allowing the festivities to resume smoothly, reported city spokesperson Lisa Derderian.

Post-parade, spectators had the opportunity to admire the floats up close at Floatfest, situated at Sierra Madre and Washington Boulevard, concluding the day’s festivities on a high note.
