According to ecologist Mike Thorsen, the remarkable flowering is attributed to a combination of factors. Last summer’s ample rainfall, coupled with the trees’ ability to “communicate between themselves,” has contributed to this spectacular display. Thorsen explained that the trees flourish when they are in good condition, and a favorable preceding summer, with ample rainfall, sets the stage for a more abundant bloom.

The previous wet summer allowed the trees to thrive with less human intervention. Thorsen noted that this favorable condition equipped the trees to divert energy towards producing flower buds. As a result, they embark on extensive flowering during favorable weather conditions.

While the abundance of flowers is a visual delight for residents, it also serves as a boon for wildlife. The flowering is considered a response to environmental variables, providing a significant resource for pollinators. Additionally, the increased blossoms mean more seeds, offering potential growth opportunities in the coming summers. Thorsen highlighted that out of millions of seeds, only about two are likely to grow, contributing to the resilience and proliferation of these iconic trees.
