As the Chinese Spring Festival approaches, the market for potted flowers and miniature trees is experiencing a surge in sales across China. The demand for plants and flowers during the Spring Festival, also known as Lunar New Year, is driven by their symbolic representation of new beginnings and growth.
In a village located in the eastern Chinese province of Anhui, renowned for its potted plants industry, flower artists report a significant increase in orders for plum blossom trees. Villagers have prepared thousands of potted plum blossom trees in various sizes, catering to diverse customer preferences.
Hong Yu, a villager, highlights the variety available: “We have prepared thousands of potted plum blossom trees in the garden. Some are small enough to be carried in your hands, and the large ones can be shipped to people’s homes.”
In the city of Qingzhou, recognized as China’s largest potted flower distribution hub, merchants note the popularity of moth orchids and anthuriums this year. Jia Meirong, a manager at a flower company, mentions that these flowers are specifically marketed for the Chinese Lunar New Year, with each pot containing 10 orchid plants. The anticipation is to sell between 50,000 to 60,000 pots during the Lunar New Year holiday.
Beyond traditional offline sales, flower merchants are also capitalizing on the booming online market, with livestreaming playing a significant role in expanding their customer base. The convenience and accessibility of online platforms contribute to the growing share of sales for potted flowers, creating a dynamic and thriving market ahead of the festive season.
