With the Chinese Lunar New Year on the horizon, flower merchants throughout China are gearing up for the festive season as eager shoppers embark on the quest for the perfect blossoms to adorn their homes.
In Taiyuan, located in north China’s Shanxi Province, a sprawling flower market has come alive with a vibrant array of blooming flowers, transforming it into a colorful oasis in the heart of the city.
Niu Jinguo, a seasoned flower merchant, shared, “Many blooming festive flowers have been prepared, including laceleafs, moth orchids, and bromeliads.”
Referred to as ‘New Year flowers’ during the country’s Spring Festival, these blossoms are renowned for their striking appearance and auspicious colors, with shades of purple and red being particularly popular.
Among the favored choices symbolizing good luck and fortune, the moth orchid, named for its moth-shaped appearance, stands out as a top pick among consumers. In Jingyang Township, located in east China’s Fujian Province, over 300,000 orchids have been cultivated, with a significant portion already reserved by wholesalers and eager customers eager to usher in luck and prosperity.
Zhou Zhiqing, a moth orchid wholesaler, expressed, “Today, I also placed an order for around 200 pots. There have been so many varieties of flowers available in recent years.”
Chen Fang, the head of a local moth orchid planting base, reported a surge in flower prices attributed to robust demand. “The prices of common breeds are expected to increase by about 5 percent. For rare breeds, the price hikes exceeded 10 percent,” she affirmed, underscoring the heightened enthusiasm surrounding the impending festive celebrations.
