In 2019, a hard freeze, combined with minimal snow cover and subsequent heavy rain, led to flooding that impacted tree roots. This year, the lack of sufficient snow and moisture during winter brings its own set of challenges.

The absence of snow cover and moisture means that trees have not had the opportunity to recover. Erin Buchholz from the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum expresses concerns about the cumulative impact of fluctuating weather conditions, including being too wet, too cold, too hot, and too dry.

To mitigate potential damage, especially if winter conditions return, it is recommended to take protective measures. Adding a layer of mulch or hay can help protect budding flowers and tree roots. In times of drought, providing adequate water to trees is essential. Mulch also serves the dual purpose of preserving moisture for the roots. Vigilance and proactive measures can contribute to the overall health and resilience of plants in the face of variable weather conditions.
