Clematis Enthusiast Finds Solace and Resilience in Gardening Amidst War

by Jennifer

Alla Olkhovska, a Ukrainian gardener and clematis enthusiast, has found solace and resilience in her garden amidst the challenges of war. Olkhovska, who grows over 120 types of clematis, is particularly drawn to the smaller, less common species, often native to the Southeastern United States, for their resilience in hot and dry conditions.

Beyond their beauty, these clematis varieties have adapted well to the increasingly harsh summers in Olkhovska’s region. Notably, species like the whiteleaf leather flower (C. glaucophylla) and scarlet leather flower (C. texensis) continue to bloom prolifically, showcasing their ability to thrive in challenging environmental circumstances.

Two years ago, as war reached Kharkiv, where Olkhovska resides, her focus shifted from building a rare-plants nursery to finding ways to support her family amidst the turmoil. Gardening became not only a source of solace but also a means of resilience during difficult times. The beauty of the clematis blooms and the act of nurturing plants provided a space for Olkhovska to find peace and strength amidst adversity.
