Lewes in Bloom, renowned for its commitment to enhancing the floral beauty of the region, has bestowed the prestigious title of “Flower of the Year” upon the captivating caladium for 2024.
Recognized for its distinctive heart-shaped leaves adorned with enchanting hues of white, pink, and green, caladiums stand out as a beloved choice for gardeners seeking to illuminate shaded areas. Their versatile nature allows them to thrive in various light conditions, from shade to partial shade and even full sun, catering to the preferences of different varieties. Furthermore, their availability in most nurseries and their resilience against diseases and pests add to their appeal.
This year, Lewes in Bloom embarks on a vibrant endeavor, intending to plant over 1,300 caladiums encompassing a diverse array of 15 distinct varieties. Warren Golde, esteemed President Emeritus of Lewes in Bloom, underscored the community’s enthusiastic response as a pivotal factor in the selection of the caladium as the Flower of the Year for 2024.
While caladiums flourish best amidst warm nights and soil temperatures surpassing 65 degrees Fahrenheit, their full splendor typically unfolds in early July across the Cape Region. Among the favored varieties meticulously cultivated by dedicated volunteers are the elegant White Queen and Candidum, boasting pristine white hues; the ethereal Seafoam Pink and Rosebud, captivating with delicate pink tones; and the vibrant Red Flash, adding a striking red accent to the landscape. Additionally, volunteers are set to intersperse cool-loving flowers like Diascia and Myosotis among the caladium bulbs, enhancing the gardens with early bursts of color.
In the pursuit of floral excellence, Lewes in Bloom continues to enchant and inspire, fostering a thriving botanical tapestry that enriches the community’s aesthetic experience.
